I Cooked Curry Again!

Haha, can't help but smile when I entitled this post!
Yes, I cooked curry again! And this time with greater success after some modifications.

The colour is not as dark compared to my first try because I didn't poach the purple carrot. What I did was sauteed the onion, white radish, red carrot, purple carrot and chilli padi. This process took the longest time, at least 15 minutes before the onions & carrots are soft enough before adding water, bring it to a boil and finally add the curry cubes. Besides the chilli padi to increase the hotness of the curry, no additional seasoning is required. Easy, peasy right?

I Cooked Curry!

This is my first try to cook curry katsu don (curry pork cutlet rice). I bought the curry sauce from Isetan Supermarket. It took me a while to decide which curry sauce to buy because there is a whole shelf to choose from ranging from different brands, intensity, etc. I finally decided on this because it has English instructions.

302 of Project 365:

My sis asked where to go for dinner before sending me & my mom home. So I said it's my treat & she can decide where to go. So we ended up at Werner's Oven which is near my sis' place.
A nice treat after cycling more than 20km on Sunday.

299 of Project 365: 榴莲 (Durian)

(Yung Kee Restaurant)

This is another must-try restaurant when you are in Hong Kong.
All the great reviews I've read online only served to fuel my curiosity to try it for myself.

In order not to disappoint myself & the 7 others in the group, I made a reservation for lunch one week in advance from Singapore. You can either call or make your reservation online via the restaurant web site. However, for group of more than 6, you have to call to make your reservation, which was what I did. The staff requested for a telephone number, so I provided my Singapore mobile number but was told that they would not be able to make international call in the event that I'm late, and the table would only be held for 15 mins. The staff was very polite & efficient and the whole reservation process was done in less than 5 mins.

I was asked why I go during lunch when it would definitely be very crowded because many people working in Central would go there for lunch. Well, I've read that if you go too late, some of the limited items would be sold out & horrors of horrors, I've came across someone who said that the roast goose was sold out when he went there for dinner. How can I possibly allow that to happen?

Boy, am I glad I made a reservation because the restaurant was really packed when we arrived but we were immediately directed to the second floor where our table awaited us.

Enough talk, let your eyes feast on the best roast goose I've ever had!

添好运 (Tim Ho Wan)

添好运 (Tim Ho Wan)
Address : Shop 8, Tsui Yuen Mansion,
2-20, Kwong Wa Street,
Mong Kok, Kowloon, Hong Kong

This is a must-try place when you visit Hong Kong. Would you believe just by looking at this picture that this restaurant had been awarded the Michelin Star?

We visited the branch at Mongkok which is near out hotel. There is also another branch at Sham Shui Po.

We went twice because the dim sum was simply great & most importantly, the price was very reasonable.

Be prepared to wait at least 30 mins to 60 mins, but I can tell you that it's definitely worth waiting for.
Just tell the staff the number of diners & they will write a number on the order slip. The number will be called out when the tables are available. The order slips come in Chinese & English, so if you can't read Chinese, request for the English version. The place is really very small, so the diners are basically sitting shoulders to shoulders.

Since went twice, we have basically try almost 90% of menu because we can share our food.

40 Hands (Forty Hands)

After our walkabout around Tiong Bahru, we finally found 40 Hands (78 Yong Siak Street) to take a break from our walk & the sweltering heat. The cafe was pretty cramped & the indoor air-con sitting area was almost full, so we decided to sit at the non air-con backyard.

Bialetti Moka Express

I bought this Bialetti stove top espresso maker while holidaying in Hong Kong in late March 2012.

I found this Bialetti Moka Express at Starbucks on Duddell Street and paid HK$420. I know it's definitely not cheap & highly marked up but I still went ahead to buy it because I wouldn't know if I might still be able to find it in Singapore. And it would also mean that I have to search everywhere, high & low, for it.

These days, whenever I travel, I'll buy either a Starbucks mug or something related to coffee as souvenir. Yes, I love coffee but I don't even own a coffee machine. My gadgets are all manually operated, ranging from the coffee grinder to the coffee maker. I think it's a cheaper & pretty authentic way to enjoy my cuppa since I only engage in my coffee cooking activity on weekends.

My next target would be one of those round glass coffee drips which I used to see at Coffee Club.

Malaysian Food Street @ RWS

My family & I finally found the opportunity to visit the Malysian Food Street (MFS) @ RWS on 14 April 2012, Saturday. 2 points to park at RWS if you are member. Other options to go to MFS include the monorail (S$3) from Vivo City or take a short walk along the Sentosa Boardwalk (S$1 entry fee).

We reached the place around noon & they were still plenty of seats available and the queue to buy our food was pretty short, except for the char koay teow which I have to wait for almost 10 mins.

Selamat Datang ke Malaysian Food Street

281 of Project 365: Modified Ondeh Ondeh

It seems like this is fast becoming a food blog soon.
Today, I tried making ondeh ondeh with greater success compared to my first try last week.
I leave the ondeh ondeh to cook longer so that the palm sugar wrapped within can melt fully. I used crushed almond flakes with sugar instead of grated coconut to coat the ondeh ondeh.
Huh, isn't this mochi? Haha, yes, a hybrid of ondeh ondeh & mochi.
Well, cooking is about creativity & personal preference, and it's so much fun.
Remember to clean up the mess in the kitchen when you are done : )

279 of Project 365: Ondeh Ondeh

My first attempt at making ondeh ondeh : )
Edible but dare not say it's a successful because I didn't cook it long enough, so the palm sugar wrapped within didn't melt completely  but it's a good start.
谁知盘中餐,粒粒皆辛苦。

251 of Project 365: Breakfast

Sunday morning, 7 Aug 2011, I awoke to the sound of heavy thunderstorm & smell of food wafting from the kitchen.
Here's my breakfast prepared by my mom & sis.
My sis was actually inspired by the "Full Works" breakfast we had at Food for Thought, and here's her take to prepare something similar.
We had rosemary focaccia bread, bratwurst, scrambled eggs with tomato & onion, not forgetting our own grinded coffee.

Food for Thought, SAM @ 8Q

SAM @ 8Q is an extension of the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) at 8 Queen (8Q) Street.

My second visit to Food for Thought.
I like this place because it is in town but away from the usual mall crowd.
A great place to enjoy my breakfast leisurely, after which I can hop over to the Singapore Art Museum or walk further down to Bugis.
